CSA Stands for Community Supported Agriculture
The CSA concept originated in Japan in the 1960s by a group of women concerned with the use of pesticides, the increase in processed and imported food, and the loss of farmers and farmland. The first CSA in the U.S. was created in Massachusetts in 1984. Today there are over 2,500 CSAs in the United States. And while we’re sure many of you know of Charmingfare Farm as a favorite family-friendly zoo, they really are a farm too, and they have a CSA!
Farmers like Charmingfare sell shares of their crops and livestock to the public. CSA’s are subscription based where members pay in advance for a “share” of the upcoming harvest. In return shareholders are ensured access to truly nourishing food. With this promo, new members get a share in this year’s Charmingfare growing season garden crop at a 20% savings (which works out to only $24.95/week). CSA programs have become a very popular alternative way to buy fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, meats and eggs directly from a local farmer. CSA programs are a direct partnership between you the consumer and the farmer.
CSA Benefits
- Freshest produce, picked at the peak of ripeness – not shipped from across the country or stored for weeks.
- Supporting sustainable farming by eating food grown with minimal impact on the environment.
- Satisfaction of knowing where your food came from and how it was grown and raised.
- Buying local is a great way to support the local economy.
Shareholders pick up their produce on Wednesdays during the 20 weeks between May 25 and October 5, 2016. The Charmingfare crew picks ripe produce that morning, and makes it available at their Farm Stand. Shareholders fill their Garden Bags (about the size of a standard brown paper grocery bag) choosing what they want and need. Food left over at the end of the day is collected and taken to the local food bank.
Plus, there is a great side benefit to being a CSA member! While at the Farm on pickup day, customers can tour Charmingfare Farm with up to 3 guests and visit the bears, wolves, etc. See and learn all about how food is grown, and pick fresh herbs and flowers from the gardens. The value of this alone goes a long way toward your weekly food share cost!
We’re sure you will have lots more questions about how this all works, so make sure to check out this Charmingfare CSA link to find out more, then head back here to start your way to quality produce at substantial savings!
