While most people believe that wine is civilization’s original fermented beverage, it is actually a delicious, honey-sourced drink called mead that holds that distinction. Mead’s origins can be traced back over 20,000 years to the African bush. Over time it became popular across Europe, India, and China, but then, for a variety of reasons, production declined some time around the Industrial Revolution. However, recently mead has enjoyed a well-deserved resurgence in popularity as folks re-discover the alluring, sensual qualities of what was originally known as the “Nectar of the Gods.” And it is in New Hampshire where you can find award-winning meads being made a short drive from your home.
$15 will get you and a special friend the Deluxe Tour of the Moonlight Meadery in Londonderry. Along with the tour, you will get a cheese and crackers tasting featuring eight meads, including the famous, semi-sweet Utopian mead, made using the casks from the Boston Beer Company’s Samuel Adams Utopias ® beer. You will also receive a $10 credit towards any of the meads sold in the meadery’s store. This package is valued at $50 but, judging from the rave reviews from the tastings alone, it is probably worth much more!
It all started back in 1995, when Michael Fairbrother tried a cyser (apple and honey mead) for the first time. Since that first sip Michael developed a passion and a masterful skill at making international award winning meads. Michael started Moonlight Meadery focused on a mission of bringing ultra premium meads to the marketplace. For him, it is more than a product and it is more than a process - it's an obsession. Michael’s meads are sold all over the country and have been featured on WMUR’s Chronicle, Yankee Magazine, and other media outlets.
